◎ Personality:

Despite being a king, Yuuri truly believes himself to be extremely average. He doesn't think he has any special talents or skills that would define him as a good king. Still, he believes that he needs to do what he can to ensure that Shin Makoku is a safe place and a successful kingdom despite his perceived shortcomings. While he would much rather focus on baseball and trying to get a girlfriend, he resolves instead to do what he was destined to do, which just so happens to be ruling a country in a strange world. It's definitely a challenge, but Yuuri steps up to it despite his own doubts that he might not be ready for it.

Above all, Yuuri is a pacifist. He believes in doing whatever he can to keep the peace and would much rather talk things out than try and fight. Several times, especially in the beginning of the series, Yuuri proclaims that he's against any kind of war, and that he won't tolerate it as a policy. So, throughout the novels, Yuuri's main focus is building diplomacy and doing anything he can to prevent a war. Yuuri also has a strong sense of justice, despising anyone who would pick on the weak and always sticking up for them. The quickest way to lose his respect is to harm innocent bystanders or his friends, and it's something he will not tolerate. Unfortunately, his resulting anger when this happens causes him to lose control, and his magic goes haywire as the demon king within him takes over and issues punishments in the name of justice; and while he has seriously injured his enemies in this state, he has yet to kill anyone.

With his pacifistic views comes a strong sense of idealism. Yuuri fully believes that he can prevent a war between the demons and the humans, and that he can prevent any sort of fighting from happening. While this is a momentous task, Yuuri doesn't let the weight of it get him down and instead does what he can to meet that goal. Of course, he runs into a lot of problems throughout the series that bring the two societies closer to war, such as villages being invaded, but Yuuri doesn't let that dishearten him and he instead tries to repair whatever damage has been done. While failures or injustices will bring him down, Yuuri is always quick to bounce back and focus on what he can do to make things better. Throughout the series, Yuuri often wonders if he's doing the right thing or if he really is cut out to be king. Still, he doesn't let those thoughts keep him from trying to do what he thinks is right, and instead pushes forward.

Another core aspect of Yuuri’s personality is his kindness towards all living beings and his ability to forgive them. He's soft when it comes to people and their feelings, often putting their needs over his and doing anything he can to protect other people. Often, he'll try to jump into situations without considering how it might affect his own livelihood, only concerned with the safety of others. That’s because, as long as Yuuri can protect other people, it doesn't really matter to him if he gets hurt—his own safety isn't a priority when it comes to other people. Multiple times, Yuuri doesn't think to make sure he'll be safe before going in to save others. For example, when he's caught in the wake of a magical item that causes the earth to crumble underneath everyone, Yuuri doesn't run or try to find a safe spot. Instead, he uses his magic to create a giant pool of water so that everyone caught up in the earthquake don't fall to their deaths. Of course, Yuuri doesn't factor himself into the equation, and he almost falls down a chasm because he's so focused on keeping everyone else safe. When it comes to forgiveness, Yuuri is open minded and willing to forgive others for what they've done, especially when it comes to wrongs committed against him. Early on in the series, a young girl named Greta comes into his castle, and nearly stabs him. This assassination attempt is thwarted, luckily, but Yuuri twists his ankle amidst the chaos. So, he decides to get his ankle treated, and invites Greta along despite the fact that she just tried to hurt him only a day ago. Yuuri fully believes that she had her reasons for it, and was willing to listen to her story, forgiving her almost immediately. As a result of his forgiveness, Greta comes to trust Yuuri and they grow close.

That isn't a rare event, though, because Yuuri’s strong sense of justice and kindness often causes everyone around him to come to trust him, and so he often wins over their loyalty, even if they considered him an enemy at first. He doesn’t take their loyalty for granted, however, because Yuuri reciprocates it by repaying them with kindness. His willingness to go the extra mile for his friends is shown especially in the Caloria arc, where Yuuri grants Caloria its freedom for his friend Flynn instead of asking for the magical item he originally sought after.

Unfortunately, Yuuri's kindness can backfire due to the fact that he trusts others almost implicitly. This leaves him open to being easily manipulated and lied to by those he trusts. For example, Murata lies to him for a while, pretending to know nothing about the strange world they've ended up in when in reality he knew all along. This leaves Yuuri feeling extremely betrayed when he finally confronts Murata about it, even though in the end he forgives him. Still, if someone with bad intentions were to gain Yuuri's trust then he would leave himself open to easily being led on and eventually betrayed.

Yuuri is also extremely impulsive and stubborn to a fault. He often doesn't consider his own safety when it comes to others and while this does show his compassion, it’s still reckless. This reckless behavior is still something Yuuri struggles to overcome, because as a king he can’t let his need to protect others get in the way of his own safety, not when he has to rule an entire country. Yuuri also tends to not budge in his views, making it impossible for him to be convinced to not do something. Often, one of Yuuri’s friends will try to convince him to go about solving a problem another way, and Yuuri will refuse. If he sees a solution that could help the most people, that’s what he’ll choose even if it compromises his safety. When Yuuri has his mind set on something, he always refuses to listen to what others have to say even if what they say is right. This lands him into trouble, especially when he gets himself involved in the personal problems of other people despite warnings from his friends.

He is also hot blooded and quick to anger, especially when someone gets hurt. This is also tied to his strong sense of justice and feeling of duty to protect the weak. But the fact that he loses control when he gets angry or upset can hurt those around him because he still cannot control his magic. Even outside of this inability to control his magic, Yuuri still gets himself in situations he'd rather not be in due to this hot blooded nature that causes him to speak out despite his best interests. Since Yuuri can't sit back when he sees others being hurt, he'll jump in to do what he can. Unfortunately, this often leads to him losing control to his magic in human territory, which is extremely dangerous due to the tensions his kingdom has with the humans.

So, while Yuuri only thinks of himself as average, many aspects of him are not. His selflessness and willing to protect others go above and beyond the average person's and it's this aspect of his personality that draws people to him. While he's a young and inexperienced king, his kindness and good intentions shine through as he always does what he considers is right. Still, that doesn't mean Yuuri is without faults, because he's still young and has yet to fully realize the consequences his impulsive decisions could have.

◎ Powers/Abilities:

Since Yuuri is a demon, he has the innate ability to use magic. His magic is water-based, so he can manipulate water and use it however he likes. He can also create rain, tidal waves, bursts of water, and create shapes such as dragons or swords using water as well. The bulk of his magic is used to manipulate and create water in whatever way he chooses.

There are also a few instances where Yuuri creates living monsters with his powers using objects around him. In one instance, he uses discarded bones to create a monster and in another he uses sand to create a giant golem.

Yuuri can't really control his power, though, and more often than not the power controls him rather than the other way around. Therefore, Yuuri himself doesn't know the specifics of his powers since he often doesn't remember the instances in which he uses them. When his magic takes control, Yuuri often describes it as being far away from his consciousness, like watching everything through a haze of snow.

The biggest change in Yuuri is that he was forced to grow up during his time at Graceside. Despite being king in a distant world, trying to prevent a war and maintain peace, Yuuri still hadn't faced much conflict—not the kind of conflict that would challenge his beliefs and the very core of his personality. So, being trapped and surrounded by death was really the first time he encountered a situation like that. Putting people on trial and sending them to their deaths caused a major moral dilemma within him, and he felt that even though he was being forced to vote, he was still sending someone to their death. So, his own feelings toward never harming anyone else, and never condoning killing someone else were greatly challenged, and he struggled with those feelings changing throughout his entire stay.

Another key part of his time there was Yuuri's own death. He died protecting a friend, walking in on her being attacked. Unfortunately, they both didn't survive and wound up becoming ghosts. At that point, Yuuri was numbed by the fact that he had actually died and had to come to terms with his own mortality. While Yuuri has been in many dangerous situations in Shin Makoku, he had never actually died because there was always someone there to save him or he was able to use his powers to get out of the situation. That wasn't the case at Graceside, though. He had to face the fact that he won't always have someone to back him up when he's in danger, and it was hard for him to accept.

With being forced to grow up and experiencing his own death also came the notion of thinking ahead. Yuuri tends to not plan ahead or think of consequences before he acts, and at Graceside that never ended well. So, Yuuri began to take more time trying to think of what he could do to help everyone without endangering himself. Both in the living world and the afterlife, everyone held meetings to plan out their next move. This also forced Yuuri to evaluate their situation and help formulate future plans for escape. Of course, Yuuri still put others ahead of himself, protecting his friend Blue from an attack directed at her by the Conductor. Without thinking, he jumped in front of her, deflecting the attack and almost dying again. So, while he does try to plan ahead, in the moment Yuuri still goes with his instinct.

He also had to find it within himself to forgive those that killed someone, and he managed to—for the most part. He never ended up trusting them again, but he didn't let that get in the way of working with them to find a way out and even rekindling a friendship, in some cases. Due to his views changing, the way he perceived betrayal changed as well. Yuuri realized that things could always be fixed, and as long as he believed in the other person, everything could turn out fine.

Seeing all of the betrayal that went, however, did make Yuuri realize that he couldn't trust everyone implicitly. He struggled with this fact for a long time, because he truly wanted to believe in everyone. But he eventually realized that people had to earn trust, and that when they did, it was worth it.

One thing that didn't change for Yuuri was his tendency to be idealistic. If anything, he became even more idealistic. With everyone around them losing hope week after week, there wasn't much Yuuri could do except tell himself and others that they'd find a way out, that everything would turn out fine in the end. And it did. So while Yuuri knows it's not productive to think nothing will go wrong, he can't completely give up hope because it's always possible for things to end up okay in the end.
